Commercial Solar in Alberta: A Guide for Business, Farm and Multi-Unit Property Owners

How commercial, agricultural and multi-unit solar works in Alberta: which properties fit best, how micro-generation and rate structures affect the numbers, permits, financing, and how Simply Renewable scopes commercial projects.

Commercial solar in Alberta has a simple logic behind it: businesses use most of their power during the day, and that is exactly when solar produces. This guide explains which commercial, agricultural and multi-unit properties fit best, how Alberta’s micro-generation rules and rate structures shape the numbers, and how Simply Renewable scopes a commercial project from first call to commissioning.

Which properties fit commercial solar best

  • Shops, warehouses and light industrial buildings with large, unshaded roofs

  • Farms and agricultural operations with daytime loads: irrigation, grain handling, ventilation, cooling

  • Retail and office buildings with weekday daytime consumption

  • Multi-unit residential and condominiums with common-area loads

  • Any Alberta property with a flat or low-slope roof and a meaningful daytime power bill

Large roofs allow larger systems, and larger systems bring the installed cost per watt down. The best candidates pair a big roof with a steady daytime load.

Micro-generation for commercial properties

Alberta’s micro-generation regulation applies to commercial sites as well as homes, with the system sized to the site’s own consumption. Surplus power is exported for credit at your retailer’s rate. Because commercial rates include demand and distribution charges, the value of solar on a commercial bill comes mostly from offsetting daytime energy use rather than from exports, which is why we model your interval data before sizing anything.

What a commercial proposal includes

  • Production modelling built from your actual consumption profile and rate structure

  • Structural review of the roof and attachment method

  • Single-line electrical design and utility interconnection plan

  • Permit and approval pathway for your municipality and wires owner

  • Equipment specification, warranty terms and a commissioning schedule

See the overall process and how it adapts to larger projects.

Permits and approvals

Commercial installs need an electrical permit and inspection through your municipality, a building permit where the roof structure requires it, and micro-generation approval from your wires owner (ENMAX, EPCOR, FortisAlberta, ATCO, or a municipal utility such as Red Deer or Lethbridge). We manage every step and do not energize the system until Permission to Operate is issued.

Financing commercial solar in Alberta

Commercial projects can be financed through equipment financing partners, in-house options for qualifying projects, or purchased outright. Some municipalities offer CEIP for non-residential properties. Because commercial solar is a capital asset, your accountant can also advise on depreciation treatment. Read about current financing paths.

Warranty and monitoring

Every panel carries a 30-year production warranty and 25-year hail coverage. Commercial systems include real-time monitoring so you and your facilities team can see production daily, and our support team is a call away after commissioning.

Where we install

We are based in Calgary and take on commercial and agricultural projects across Alberta, including Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and the rural areas between them. Read our Calgary guide, Edmonton guide, Red Deer guide or Lethbridge guide.
